1. IRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO is similar to its sibling the i3 EVO. They differ only in the fact that the i3+ comes with self-emptying capabilities. That makes the i3+ an excellent option for those who want a hands-off, fully automated cleaning experience, but aren't afraid of taking the time to empty their robot's trash bin when it is full.

Both robots do well picking up surface debris off carpets and hard floors and they're excellent at getting around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes a smart map of your home to assist the i3+ to navigate and clean efficiently. However unlike the i7+ or other top rated robots we tested, the i3+ doesn't have a feature for avoiding obstacles and therefore it could get stuck on things like socks or power cords and it may have trouble in navigating through transitions between surfaces like from hardwood to carpet.

iRobot recommends clearing areas where the i3+ EVO will vacuum prior to when you use it, which includes putting away any clutter or toys it may come across. You should also keep the dustbin and filter clear to avoid becoming clogged. When the i3+ EVO's internal bin is empty or smart vacuum the battery is low it returns to the docking station and automatically empties the dirt into the station's external dustbin. It then continues cleaning where it began. The i3+ EVO's battery can last for approximately an hour and a half of continuous use, and it takes around three hours to recharge.

The iRobot i7+ is the top model in iRobot's flagship line and is packed with the latest technology. It's self-charging and self-navigating. -- the most important feature of all -- it has self-emptying bins that eliminate one of the most important sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum cleaner comparison vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ can keep up to 10 automatic floor cleaners plans and their names with Imprint Smart Mapping, an application that lets it create maps of rooms so that it can clean them more efficiently. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning jobs, and you can control your robot via the app or by voice.

The i7+ is quicker and more maneuverable in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also cleaned large pet hair pieces from all surfaces including carpeting. Its biggest advantage over the eufy, though the dust bin is self-emptying that eliminates a major cause of maintenance and reduces recurring costs.

We were also awestruck by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services which we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning sessions and to move around the room and vacuum a specific space. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. After being connected, to speak commands to the i7+, like "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s preferences and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world full of vacuums that are cordless and look like minivans or buses, this tiny Dyson model feels like an automobile. It has the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum in many households, but it also fits perfectly next to the table for a coffee or shelves where you can wave it around like the magic device.

The V10 is powered by a seven-cell, energy-dense lithium-ion battery that produces continuous, non-fading power for 60 minutes. The sophisticated whole-machine filter system traps allergens, then lets cleaner air into your home. Its specialized head uses stiff nylon bristles to penetrate into carpets, and then pick up large crumbs or fine dust. It has three suction modes to suit the task at hand. The main drawback of the V10 is its short run time. Its marketing claims that it has up to 60 minutes of running time are not true as CR's tests have shown. This is a typical battery-powered vacuum's run time. This is enough time to clean the average-sized home but not enough to get into every corner. (A second run generally works). This doesn't mean that this model doesn't have its benefits: It's lighter and mobile than the older cordless Dysons and its vacuuming efficiency is better on carpets with low pile.

It was able to remove the majority of types of debris and sizes during our tests and would often go over the same area several times to give an extensive clean. Its flat front end helps it reach into corners and along the edges of walls and walls, which is a nice touch.

Its smart navigation system uses iAdapt to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home, but it's not equipped with the mapping capability of more advanced models like our top picks such as the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. In our testing, the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and dealt with dog hair (on carpet) very well, picking up 86% of it. However, it didn't do particularly well in avoiding taller objects like cords and socks which was a disappointment.
