A robot vacuum will keep your floors clean enough to reduce the frequency of manual hoovering. Choose one that has excellent navigation, is able to clean stairs and corners, and has a large dust bin that requires emptying only periodically.

There are also models that mop and charge themselves which can be beneficial for those with children or pets. A majority of the top performers in our tests have great obstacle avoidance.

1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO is similar to its sibling, the i3 EVO. They differ only in the fact that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. This makes the i3+ a great choice for people who want an entirely automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but aren't afraid of having to empty their dust bin manually when it is full.

Both robots are adept at removing surface dirt on floors and carpets and can move around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes a smart maps of your home to assist the i3+ to navigate and clean up efficiently. However unlike the i7+ and other top-rated robots we tested, the i3+ doesn't have obstacle-avoidance capabilities, so it may get stuck on things like socks or power cords, and may have issues traversing transitions across surfaces like hardwood to rug.

iRobot suggests that you clean up the area where the i3+ EVO vacuums before using it. This includes putting away any toys or other clutter it may encounter. It is also recommended to keep the filters and dust bin free of dirt to prevent them from becoming clogged. When the i3+'s internal bin is full or its battery is low it will return to its docking station, automatically emptying its debris into the station's external dustbin, and then continues cleaning the area where it started. Battery life is about an hour-and-a-half of continuous usage. It takes three hours to fully charge.

2. Roomba from iRobot

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the top model in iRobot's flagship line and comes with all the latest features. It has self-charging and self vacuum-navigating. But the most important feature is its auto-emptying bin. This will eliminate the need for regular maintenance.

The Roomba I7+ is able to better map rooms with Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and control your robot broom with voice or via the app.

In our tests the i7+ was quicker and more maneuverable than our runner-up which was the eufy RoboVac G30, and it picked up large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces types, including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is its self-emptying garbage bin, which eliminates major sources of maintenance and reduces the cost of maintenance.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services which we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning routines and move around the room and sweep a specific space. The process of connecting the i7+ to these services was simple and straightforward using the iRobot Home app. When connected, we were able to use the i7+'s voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options to manage i7+ settings and evaluating performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world of vacuums with cords that feel like minivans or buses, this tiny Dyson model feels like an old-fashioned sports car. It's got the power and features to replace a stand-up best floor vacuum robot for most households, but it also fits in well next to a coffee table or on the bookshelf, that you can spin around like the magic tool.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell energy-dense Lithium-ion battery, which produces power without fading for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filter system captures allergens and expels cleaner air back into your home. The specialized head uses rigid nylon bristles to penetrate into carpets and collect large crumbs or fine dust. It comes with three suction modes that can be adapted to suit the task. It is able to swiftly switch between handheld and floor washing robot vacuum, and vice versa.

This model also has docks that charge to 100% in about 3.5 hours and offers easy access to two attachments and the clip for a wand. This is a major improvement over previous Dysons that require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its limited running time. As CR's tests have shown, its marketing claims of up to 60 minutes are not true. This is a typical battery-powered cordless vacuum's running time. It's still enough time to clean most of an average-sized house, but not quite long enough to get every single area (though a second run-through usually can be effective). This model has its own advantages, however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than older Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is noticeable superior for carpet floors with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

One of iRobot's most adored robot vacuums, the 694 is an entry-level model that's an excellent option for those who don't want to invest too much on a best robot cleaner. It was able to pick up most types of debris and sizes in our tests and would often go over the same area many times to ensure an efficient clean. Its flat front design allows it to reach the corners and edges of walls.

Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate around your home, but it's not equipped with the mapping capabilities of more advanced models like our top choices and the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. It can get stuck on phone cords or low furniture and often runs out of power before returning to its original location.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways over the Roomba 694, as it has less parts that require regular cleaning, comes with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtration system, incurs lower recurring cost and has more advanced automation capabilities and can better navigate itself. It also has a larger dustbin and charges quicker.

The eufy RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 for a variety of reasons, since it has a better battery life, the ability to change its suction power mode manually and has physical boundary strips, and is controlled by your smartphone's voice assistant. It also feels more sturdy and has a stronger motor, and works better on both bare floors and low-pile carpet, while providing a greater variety of features for automation.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a name is seen on a variety of electronic gadgets for your home, so it comes as no surprise that they're also one of the most popular mop and robot vacuum manufacturers. Their Jet Bot AI+ is packed with cutting-edge onboard technology to aid in navigation and obstacles avoidance.

The app gives you plenty of options to customize your robotic cleaner, such as virtual barriers mopping water levels, behavior adjustments, docking frequency settings, and more. The app is simple to navigate and use as are other Samsung devices.

In our tests of the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and dealt with dog hair (on carpet) quite well, clearing up 86% of it. However, it didn't do particularly well in avoiding larger objects, like cords and socks which was disappointing. It's also more expensive than the other models we've tested, and this could be a deal breaker for certain shoppers.

The smart vacuum comes with an onboard camera that can be accessed via the app. You can also set up a live stream from the robot's cleaning station. This feature allows you to check in on your pets or children while you're away. The dustbin and filter are washable to make cleanup quick and easy. The Jet Bot AI+ comes with an automatic clean station which helps keep the bin clean and optimizes suction power.

6. Black & Decker Robot Vacuum

Black and Decker robots have been developed specifically for flooring made of hard wood. The robots have an extra-wide cleaning path, and a dustbin that is 2X bigger than the competitors. This allows them to clean the area for a longer period of time. They also have two side sweepers that can be used to clean along edges and corners. The POWERSERIES Extreme model comes with AutoSense technology, which senses the presence of surface litter or embedded dirt and then automatically adjusts its power level. It also includes a smart application that lets you browse the virtual map, and control the functions and schedules. You can also monitor the vacuum's battery status and return it to its dock for charging at the touch of the button. The app also lets you to customize the lights on top of the vacuum using different colors so you can easily identify the areas where it's focused or where it's got stuck.

The application also allows you to manually steer the robot should you need to. My living room rug for example is darkly colored that can trip up some other robots. The HRV 425BL however was able to continue to move across the border without registering the cliff. The ability to program a cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving advantage.
