For one, the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to get caught up in shoes and socks and can't navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It also doesn't come with cameras that let it see the corners of the room.

It's still a good deal particularly if your office or home has a lot of unfinished floors and you want to save some money. Plus, it's very quiet and can work when you're at work or school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming feature that's available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying dock, though. And, if you need to, you can switch the mopping pad for dry ones in a matter of just a few seconds.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With a sleek, circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba than the competitors' boxy units this mop and robot vacuum is among the most attractive designs in our evaluations. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also its smartest. It has advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the only robot vacuum or mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is due to a combination high-tech sensors, including a structured light system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, offering an easy mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's still quite a noisy unit, which can be a problem if you run it in the morning before work, or at night when you try to fall asleep.

It's also a bit costly, but not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. If you're willing to live some more volume and some extra cost, this is a very efficient two-in-one device that should delight most.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features that let you get rid of your chores. Like Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes care of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multi-function dock that automatically empties the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank, washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of the combination of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and identify obstacles, making it more efficient than some of its premium rivals. It also has a camera mounted on the front for real-time hazard detection, although this wasn't quite reliable in our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also has an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the house depending on how dirty these areas tend to be.

It also mops using only one pad and a reciprocating motion that is more efficient than most of the robot mop cleaners that we've examined. It's self-sufficient too, with a fully-featured app as well as a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through an initial mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to set up an automatic spot-clean. You can also use it to rank your most filthy areas to improve performance. The app also provides access to a host of features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.
