1. Roomba Q5 Pro
The Q5 Pro, and its more expensive sibling the Q7 Max Series are among the most powerful robotic vacuums we've tested. They have motors that are top-of-the class and can handle up to 5,500 Pascals. As with other premium iRobot models (including the top-rated model) they employ smart mapping technology to design detailed floor plans that avoid home-based obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also come with Carpet Boost, a feature that increases its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.
Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our floor tests that test for bare floors and are particularly effective in cleaning pet hair. There are some issues, however, that prevent them from being our first option. One of the flaws of the Q5 is its navigation system does not have AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's also prone to become stuck on shoes and socks and couldn't navigate through rooms with a lot of people well during our tests. Also, it doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of a room.
It's still a good value particularly if your home or office has a lot of unfinished floors and you're looking to save some money. It's also very quiet and works when you're at work or in school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming feature that's offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 does have an auto-emptying dock, however. If you're in need of it mop, the mopping pad can be swapped for one that is wet in just a few just a few seconds.
2. IRobot Roomba X30
The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into a compact, sleek package. Its quick navigation and smart cleaning maps make it easy to clean and effective at taking on larger particles, such as pet hair. It also has a self-emptying bin with powerful suction and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, but it isn't as effective as some of its competitors in terms of deep cleaning.
This high-performing mop and vacuum combination utilizes advanced sensors to avoid obstacles and pet waste and it learns the layout of your home over time for more efficient cleaning. The app lets you customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. It has a battery life that is comparable to other models.
If the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can instruct it to pull back and extend its mop. This helps prevent cross contamination. Its flex arm is also perfect for getting under low-lying furniture and along baseboards. However, it's not equipped with the same washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.
During tests, X30 Ultra was the most efficient robot vacuum/mop which could sweep the entire house and had 66 percent of its battery remaining. It also did a great job cleaning a variety of rooms and floors with different flooring types, including certain area rug. Its obstacle detection was great and it stayed clear of fake dog turds and socks, shoes, and bundles of cables.
It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however it offers superior suction, a dustbin on board that automatically empties into its base, and it supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after it vacuums this feature, which we've not seen on other robot vacuum/mop combos.
3. IRobot Roomba X40
With a sleek circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba than the competitors' boxes this mop and robot vacuum is one of the most appealing looking in our tests. iRobot's latest flagship model also happens to be its smartest, with advanced features including enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot cleaner that can autonomously wash mop pads).
It's the only robot vacuum/mop that scored a perfect 10 in our tests due to a mix of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mop mops.
Like other iRobot models like the X40 is easy to use, offering an easy mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's a noisy unit which could be a problem if you run it in the morning before work or at night as you try to sleep.
It's also a bit costly but not as expensive as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. This is a dual-purpose vacuum that's very capable, but it's going to cost you more and produce more noise.
4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features that let you get rid of your chores. Similar to Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take care of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically empties the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, and washes and dries its mop pads.
The smart robot makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its premium competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time but this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was often confused with power cords or obstructions.
Its vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to accomplish the task. It also has an option called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas of the house depending on how dirty these areas are.
If you own a larger home, you should consider selecting a robot that comes with zones or spot cleaning modes. This allows you to inform the robot of which area of your house needs to be cleaned using the app or voice control. If you have lots of furniture, a stairway mode is also useful. For families with busy schedules recharge functions and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off could be very beneficial.
5. iRobot Roomba RX3
The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you would expect from its price tag. It vacuums well, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using one pad and a rotating motion which is cleaner than the majority of the robot mop cleaners that we've examined. It's self-sufficient too, with a full-featured app and a self-emptying, washable base.
The iRobot application is designed to guide you through the mapping process, which gathers information on your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to set up a spot-clean. You can also use it to rank your most filthy areas for better performance. The app offers a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.
It is also able to reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It has a powerful 8,000 Pascal suction as well as sophisticated combs that remove pet hair. It also has the ability to create a spot-clean that intensely cleans a localized area.
The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and less expensive alternative to iRobot Roomba. It's more appealing, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras appear like cute eyes. It does a great job vacuuming, but it is more likely to be stuck on low thresholds. It also has a higher noise than other top robot vacuums we've examined. It also has an app that is less intuitive and has a tiny base station that doesn't double as a bin to empty.
