Charles Darwin's theory on natural selection explains how animals that are better equipped to adapt biologically to changing environments over time, and those that don't become extinct. This process of evolution is the basis of science.
What is Evolution?
The term "evolution" can have many nonscientific meanings, including "progress" or "descent with modification." It is a scientific term that refers to the process of change of characteristics over time in organisms or species. In terms of biology the change is due to natural selection and genetic drift.
Evolution is a key concept in the field of biology today. It is a well-supported theory that has withstood the test of time and a multitude of scientific tests. In contrast to other theories in science such as the Copernican theory or the germ theory of disease, the evolution theory is not a discussion of religion or the existence of God.
Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck believed that certain physical traits were predetermined to evolve in a stepped-like manner over time.
