The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests on floors that were bare, and they are particularly adept in cleaning hair from dogs. They do have some flaws however, which hinder them from being our first option. One of the flaws of the Q5 is that its navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's also prone to become stuck on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with lots of people well during our tests. Also, it doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of a room.

Still, it's very good, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly unfinished home or office. It's also very quiet and you can use it when you're at work or going to school. The only thing it doesn't have that you won't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on well and aren't able to take on dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle, however. If you're required to mop, the mopping pad can be replaced with one that is wet in just a few just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into a compact, sleek package. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it simple to clean and efficient at dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also features self-emptying dustbins, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robotic hoover for carpets but it isn't as effective as some of its competitors in terms of deep cleaning.

This top-performing mop and vacuum combination uses advanced sensor technology to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste and it also learns the layout of your home over time for more efficient cleaning. The app allows you to set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. It has a battery lifespan that is similar to other models.

If the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted space, you can tell it to pull back and extend its mops. This can help avoid cross contamination. During tests, X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop to complete the task of cleaning a whole home, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It did a good cleaning job on a variety of floors and rooms with different flooring types including certain area rug. Its obstacle detection was top notch and it was nimbly avoiding fake dog turds, socks, shoes and cables.

It's more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, but it has superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically fills up its base, and also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature we haven't seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combinations.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba than the competition's boxy units this robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most attractive looking models in our reviews. iRobot's latest flagship model also is its most advanced model, with features that are cutting-edge like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop that scored an exemplary 10/10 in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can fully self-refill and empty its base station, and boasts an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It comes with a simple mobile app interface that integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's an eerily noisy device, which can be problematic if you run it in the morning prior to work or at night as you try to sleep.

It's also a bit expensive, but not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally powerful and more attractive. It's a dual-purpose vacuum that is very efficient however, it's going to cost you more and produce more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that let you get rid of your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes care of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multi-function dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot employs the combination of LIDAR and structured light to create the floor plan and detect obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its top competitors. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection however this was not completely foolproof in our tests, and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to complete the task. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates how hard the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home in accordance with the degree of dirt they are.

For bigger homes, it's worth opting for models with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean one particular area of your home using the app or via voice commands. A stair mode can be beneficial if you have lot furniture. Also, a recharge and resume function that allows your robot vacuum to continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you might think from its price. It is a great job vacuuming, picking up 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad that has a reciprocating motion, which is cleaner than the other robot mop cleaners we've examined. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and a self emptying base that is washable.

The iRobot app is designed to guide you through an exercise in mapping, which gathers information on your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. You can use it to create cleaning schedules, plan a spot clean or to sort out your rooms with the most dirt to ensure better performance. The app comes with a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
